Educational Psychology Doctoral Programs

Frederick “Fred” Umar is an accomplished composer/arranger.. In addition to his work as a composer, Fred Umar spends time pursuing a Doctorate of Education in Educational Psychology, with an anticipated graduation date of December 2022.

Graduate students who enroll in a Doctorate of Educational Psychology program have the opportunity to focus their studies on several areas of school psychology, ranging from the counseling and assessment of students to various aspects of special education.

Courses are often rooted in the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) practice model and the organization’s 10 domains of service delivery. The NASP model for effectively integrating school psychological services was first developed in 2010 and has continued to evolve and build off the success of past iterations, with an eye on optimizing psychological services in a school setting. The NASP’s 10 domains of service delivery include data-based decision making, psychological interventions, and the provision of equitable practices to support a diverse student population.

In addition to school psychology, doctoral candidates are instructed in leadership and effective teaching practices. In fact, some programs utilize courses to prepare students for roles as department chairs or dean at the university level.

ACDA’s Fund for Tomorrow

Experienced composer and arranger Fred Umar works as an adjunct professor, teaching various subjects, ranging from educational music approaches to the value of educational psychology in special education. Frederick Umar possesses a doctorate in education, with an emphasis in music. As a composer and arranger, Fred Umar is a member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA)..

The American Choral Directors Association aims to deliver excellence and nurture lifelong involvement in chiral music for everyone through education, performance, composition, and advocacy. One of the organization’s resources is the Fund for Tomorrow.

The ACDA’s Fund for Tomorrow provides American youths access to music opportunities. The fund encourages choral directors and young people who have passion and wish to pursue a career in music, as it provides an avenue for them to further their passion and express themselves.

ACDA’s Fund for Tomorrow has been used to provide 20 grants all over the country since 2014. Some organizations and projects that have benefitted from the fund are Meet in the Middle, Join Voices Chicago, Chelsea High School School, and Detroit Renaissance High School Music Cultural Exchange.

French Hymn “Angels We Have Heard on High”

Over the course of his career, composer, arranger, and educator Dr. Frederick “Fred” Umar has undertaken numerous transcriptions of choral works for wind ensembles and symphonic orchestra. Among Dr. Fred Umar’s published pieces is a 2017 transcription of a Dan Goeller arrangement of the traditional French carol “Angels We Have Heard on High.”

Originally performed in the 18th century, the popular hymn, inspired by Luke 2:6-20, was first published in 1819 in North America for the Diocese of Quebec. The various translations or versions that subsequently emerged derive from this eight stanza French Catholic text. They take the form of an alternating dialogue between the Bergers, or shepherds, and the “Femmes de Bethlehem,” with the entire ensemble singing together in two stanzas, including the last.

In 1935, the carol reached a wider audience through its introduction into Methodist hymnals. A seminal version in the 1966 Methodist Hymnal featured a compelling arrangement by Austin C. Lovelace, an anthem composer, and also introduced its current English title. Throughout the years what has not changed about the song, in its various incarnations, is that it provides a joyful and welcoming invitation to join in celebrating the birth of Christ.

Aaron Copland’s Works for Dance

Dr. Frederick “Fred” Umar is a music composer, arranger, and educator whose diverse body of work has received awards and been written about across his professional career. One of Dr. Fred Umar’s awards came from the Aaron Copland Trust, which awarded him transcription rights to the 20th century American composer’s piece “Dance Symphony.”

One of the unique aspects of Copeland’s career is the large volume of music he created for dance productions. This began in 1935 with a commission for a ballet score, “Hear Ye! Hear Ye!,” from choreographer Ruth Page. While this Rashomon-like production, set in a court of law, found only limited success, it did lead to a higher profile commission from the Ballet Caravan in New York. This was 1938’s “Billy the Kid,” a seminal work that incorporated numerous folk and cowboy song motifs and planted Copeland’s image firmly in the American West.

This Western thread continued in the 1942 ballet score, “Rodeo.” Composed for choreographer Agnes De Mille, it featured a fiddle tune borrowed from John and Alan Lomax’s field recordings for the Library of Congress. Copland’s culminating ballet score was 1944’s “Appalachian Spring,” which was created for a Martha Graham production that was initially performed at the Library of Congress. This would be Copeland’s last dance score until the late 1950s, when he created “Dance Panels” for an abstract production.
