Frederick “Fred” Umar is a music professional with a doctorate in curriculum and instruction (music), and a self-employed composer who has worked on numerous commissions, recordings, and original published works. As a professional in the music industry, Fred Umar is affiliated with many associated organizations such as The League of American Orchestras.
The League of American Orchestras (LAO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the experience of orchestral music, supporting those working in the field of music, and advocating for the music industry at a legislative level. The group’s vision is to share the orchestral experience with all and for the industry to be supported by individuals and organizations, as the group believes it is “an indispensable leader, resource, and voice for the orchestra community and its value to the public.” Since its inception in 1942, the League has grown to more than 1,800 members across North America, and is a bridge for networking musicians, conductors, board members, volunteers, and other individuals in the industry.
In 2020 and 2021, LAO has been working to further its mission through legislative advocacy. Federal COVID-19 relief funding for orchestras, visas for foreign guest artists, and other issues are among the key issues LAO has been facing. The League is urging Congress to act quickly in ensuring employees' positions, as well as extending pension relief, unemployment benefits, and other forms of financial relief in order to support the arts and the nonprofit sector.
